Mother’s Day Special | 12k+ orders in 3 years, this mother-daughter duo on Etsy will stop at nothing!

Partnership in a small business often proves to be beneficial as it runs on the best of what two or more people have to offer. Two skillsets are any day better than one. To utilize each individual’s respective expertise, to take the venture to new levels and to soar together, how can that not be a good idea?!

What’s even better? Partnering with a loved one. While it might sound like a risky, jeopardizing situation, it’s definitely worth taking the leap.

For our Mother’s Day Special conversation, meet Erinna from Bubbles and Bongo on Etsy, who teamed up with her mom, Rosemary, to start a business, and she wouldn’t have it any other way! They both complement each other so well. Read on!

3 years and that huge number of sales! Congratulations, you guys! We’re thrilled to know how the journey has been so far.

Thank you so much and we are extremely appreciative of the response that our shop has received. We never thought that what started as a hobby for both of us would eventuate into something where we can share our love for crochet with our fellow craft lovers.

How did the whole idea to have a shop strike you? Let’s hear the story.

Initially, our thought was that we needed a way to support our yarn budget…plus, we were running out of space at home to store all our finished dolls! We were both a little nervous as to whether we were good enough to sell our dolls and whether anyone would even buy them. Eventually, we made the decision that we were going to take the plunge and launched our Etsy shop in 2015. Since then, we evolved into the roles of mum as doll maker (as she has better quality control) and daughter as pattern maker (as the frustrated artist who can’t draw).

How do you make sure you’re running on schedule? Do you have any strict plan that you follow?

We don’t really follow a strict plan. Each finished doll creation we have for sale takes about 8 days to make. As such, there is a natural cycle with how quickly those dolls are turned over. As for the patterns, at minimum, we aim to release one a month but this can be more if the creative juices are flowing (and if real work doesn’t get in the way) or this can be slightly delayed depending on other deadlines to be met.

We’d love it if you could share your goals for the shop in the coming years.

Our perpetual number one goal is to produce dolls and patterns of the highest quality. This will hopefully be a goal we will meet and continue to surpass. For our finished dolls range, we are thinking of selling these using a “modular” model with customers able to build their own doll to their individual preferences. For our patterns, we are looking to produce all-in-one crochet pattern kits that use and include organic and ethically sourced yarn.

If you find yourself interested in something that had not originally been a part of your life plan, pursue and explore the possibilities as you never know where something can take you.

Do you have any regrets from the past that you’ve learned from?

We are grateful that we haven’t really had any cause for regret on our journey so far. Any lessons we have learned have been built more on the constructive experiences we have encountered since starting our shop.

How has your family supported you through the journey? Please tell us about the role they play in your success.

We are lucky that as a mother and daughter team, we are able to go craft shopping together and bounce ideas off each other. As a family, we don’t hold back on giving each other our honest opinions, which we think is important for producing products of the best quality.  Our dad/husband is important as we make him “like” our photos on Instagram, providing much needed support and our older sister/daughter is also a crafty person (though not crochet specifically), so she loves to have craft chats with us too.

Do you have a favorite quote that has kept you going through tough times? Share with us.

There are so many wonderful quotes out there but one that constantly reminds us of how to make the most of each day is one by Gandhi – “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever”. Life is too short to worry about the little things that in the wider context end up having little impact. Appreciate the good things that we have going in our lives, make the most of each day that we have with our loved ones and never stop experiencing new things.

We are grateful that we haven’t really had any cause for regret on our journey so far. Any lessons we have learned have been built more on the constructive experiences we have encountered since starting our shop.

If you could go back in time and tell one thing to your younger self, what would it be?

If you find yourself interested in something that had not originally been a part of your life plan, pursue and explore the possibilities as you never know where something can take you. Who would have thought that crochet would lead us down this journey!

When you’re not working, what do you like to spend your time doing?

Crochet! Shop, golf and read…and in the case of mum – play Candy Crush!

Before we end it, lastly, what’s the best thing your business has taught you?

Never be afraid to take the plunge and test unchartered waters. Take the chance, as you never know how things can turn out.

I’m not sure why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it a problem on my end?
I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.
